Nightlife in Rome

Like most continental cities, Rome is as buzzing at night time as it is during the day. As the sun sets the numerous monuments and churches along side the majestic squares are lit up, providing a spectacular backdrop for walking about the city at night.

Famed for its food, Rome has an unsurprising number of Italian restaurants which, as well as fuelling tired bodies after a hard day's sight-seeing, can turn into a relaxing way to spend an evening. Many of the city's famed piazzas have terraces outside the restaurants and bars from which tourists can sit and watch street performers while soaking up the atmosphere. But for those looking for a more lively evening, Rome has plenty on offer.

Bars and nightclubs stay open well into the night in which to relax, talk or dance. From vast clubs in glittering palaces with amazing sound systems to more down to earth bars, tourists are guaranteed to find something to suit their tastes. Campo de fiori is especially popular with younger crowds, transforming from a bustling flower market during the day into an even livelier night scene. Piazza Navona is also one of the liveliest places for an evening out, with numerous bars surrounding the square and the roads running off it.

The narrow streets of Travestere are extremely lively; the labyrinth of alleys and lanes are packed with bars and clubs often playing live music. For those keen to meet fellow tourists and have a relatively cheap alcohol-fuelled evening, there are numerous Scottish and Irish pubs dotted around the streets of Rome. A number of tourist organisations and youth hostels put on pub crawls, enabling people to get to know other travellers at the same time as the city.

Drunken tourists inevitably attract predatory Italian men, or 'sleazy Marcoes' as they are sometimes referred to in Italy, who will happily voice their appreciation of the females they encounter. Enlarged egos are not uncommon with shouts of 'bella bella' following women down the streets. Clubbing enthusiasts should head to the discoteche in Testaccio, with the area around Piramide metro station and spreading down the Via Ostiense containing the highest number of nightclubs. Metaverso in particular has offbeat DJs and slightly cheaper entry prices, while Villaggio Globale is renowned for its big live acts.

Tourists looking for a bar with trendy sophistication should check out Akab. Although today's nightlife might not be quite the same as the decadency captured in Fellini's La dolce Vita, tourists to Rome can still spend a night in one of many glamorous nightclubs. Some of the most popular include Gilda, frequented by politicians and showbiz stars, Goa, which has electronic music and art exhibitions, and Ex maggazzini and Black Out rock club, both of which showcase live music. With so much to offer there may seem an overwhelming choice to choose from, but, when in Rome, do as the Romans do and take advantage of all the restaurants, bars and clubs that the city is teeming with.
